History

The Children’s Burn Foundation was founded in 1985 by the world renowned plastic surgeon and burn specialist Dr. A. Richard Grossman and McLean Stevenson, concerned child advocate and actor.

Dr. Grossman, currently the co-medical director of the Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks, has pioneered numerous innovative medical procedures for the treatment of burns. McLean Stevenson, having suffered burns as a child from a Halloween pumpkin, served as national spokesperson for the Foundation until his death in 1996. Their goal was to provide treatment to children with severe burns who had nowhere else to turn for care.

Growth of Foundation

In the years since its inception, the Foundation’s mission has grown to include services to support the psychological recovery from burn trauma and the short term emergency needs of families, as well as fire safety and prevention education programs for children, parents and other caregivers. In 2006, the Foundation began a program, in partnership with the American Burn Association, to provide burn care education and training at teaching hospitals in developing countries.

Dedicated Board and Council

The Foundation was restructured in 1995 with the creation of the 27-member Board of Trustees. In 1996, The Council, a volunteer group of more than 75 members that works to support the Foundation’s fundraising and community outreach initiatives, was established. The leadership and commitment of Board and Council members have inspired nearly 20,000 supporters and generated more than $14 million to benefit young burn survivors and their families.

Full Range of Services

Today, the Foundation provides state-of-the-art reconstructive treatment, emergency family assistance, survivor and family camps, counseling, a teen support program, school reentry support and a newsletter for young burn survivors along with prevention and education programs to nearly 65,000 children and families annually.
