Careful, That’s Hot!

Two-thirds of children hospitalized for severe burns are under five-years-old.

Research shows that more than 80% of burns to children are preventable. The majority of pediatric burns occur primarily at home, in the kitchen or bathroom. Mindful of these facts, staff at the Children’s Burn Foundation partnered with the Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital to develop Careful, That’s Hot!, a scald prevention program, which teaches parents and caregivers of young children how to prevent burns. This program reviews children’s developmental stages and has recommendations for making homes safer – for example, using items such as non-slip placemats to prevent spills of hot liquids, or a doorway barrier to keep a child out of the kitchen when you are cooking.

Careful, That’s Hot! is presented at child-care facilities, Head Start programs and parenting classes in the San Fernando Valley area. Following the presentation, parents and caregivers are encouraged to discuss the material and how to implement the recommendations in their own homes. Program concepts are reinforced with takeaway aids including baby bathwater thermometers, a magnetic dry-erase board with burn prevention tips, and a book for children featuring the character, Bernie Burn.

The success of Careful, That’s Hot! is evident by the changes caregivers make after attending a presentation. The most recent independent evaluation reported that 86% of participants made at least one change in their home to prevent burns. And 100 % of respondents reported sharing information that they learned from the program with family and friends.

The program is 45 minutes in length and is presented in either English or Spanish.
